Operation Volcanoes of Rage was a Palestinian military operation against Israeli targets, which occurred on December 12, 2004, and was carried out by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, in cooperation with the "Fatah Hawks," one of the military wings of the Fatah movement. The attack targeted the Israeli military Rafah crossing on the border of the Gaza Strip with Egypt.
Details of the attack:
Palestinian fighters dug a long tunnel underneath the military site located at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt over a period of four months, extending about 600 meters in length, to reach the Israeli Zionist point at the crossing.
At exactly 05:07 PM on Sunday, 1 Dhu al-Qi'dah 1425 AH, corresponding to December 12, 2004, a large bomb weighing about 1300 kg of explosives was detonated. Then, two fighters, one from the Al-Qassam Brigades and the other from the "Fatah Hawks" (after exiting from another tunnel prepared for this purpose), advanced and engaged in clashes with occupation soldiers at the site for about an hour. The Fatah Hawks fighter was martyred. While the Al-Qassam fighter managed to safely withdraw after successfully completing his mission, where he was able to seize a heavy caliber weapon from one of the occupation soldiers (a Mag).
The fighter confirmed the killing of seven Zionists, four of them by his own hands, while he attempted to capture another soldier, but due to his resistance, the fighter killed him and withdrew safely. An hour after the operation, another bomb weighing 200 kg was detonated to target the ambulance crew and any remaining occupation soldiers in the vicinity of the site. It is worth mentioning that the occupation forces did not reach the site until (40) minutes after the start of the operation.
This was confirmed by "Abu Ubaydah," the spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades. On the other hand, the enemy admitted that rockets were launched for cover and anti-tank shells were fired at a "kibbutz" outside the wall - for deception.
The Zionist officers who rushed to the military site found that the operation had completely destroyed it. The explosion also damaged the crossing point, which was about 300 meters away from the military site.
