Al-Aqsa Mosque holds the distinction of being the Qibla (the direction where Muslims pray towards) for all the prophets before Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It was the initial Qibla to which the Prophet prayed before it was redirected towards Mecca (Saudi Arabia).
The Islamic association with Al-Aqsa Mosque is deeply rooted in the miraculous journey of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), known as Isra and Mi'raj. During this event, the Prophet was transported from “the Sacred Mosque”/”Al-Masjid Al-Haram” (Masjid in Mecca, Saudi Arabia) to Al-Aqsa Mosque, where he led prayers as an imam (the one leading the ones praying) before ascending to the heavens. He was commanded by Allah in the highest heaven, to perform prayer (the five daily prayers of Muslims).
It is the third holiest mosque that Muslims revere, following the Sacred Mosque ‘Al-Masjid Al-Haram’ in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. Whoever enters Al-Aqsa and performs prayers, whether under its trees, beneath one of its domes, on a platform, within a courtyard, inside the Dome of the Rock, or in the Qiblī Mosque, their prayers hold multiplied rewards.
