The Israeli army shelled the Shaja'iya neighborhood indiscriminately in the early hours of Sunday, July 20, 2014, with hundreds of internationally prohibited artillery shells. This resulted in the martyrdom of 74 people, including 17 children, and hundreds of civilians were injured, most of whom were women, children, and the elderly.
