Gush Emunim extremists attempted to storm the mosque, but citizens resisted and thwarted the attempt. Extremist Mayer Kahane and his group tried again with support from a large police force, but over ten thousand citizens stood against them, engaging in fierce confrontations to defend the sanctuary. Dozens were injured.
