Likud Party leader Ariel Sharon provocatively visits Al-Aqsa Mosque, stating that Israel controls the area and will not give it to the Palestinians because it is built on a sacred Jewish site. These statements and the visit sparked a state of agitation, protests, and subsequently erupted clashes between Palestinians and Israelis. These clashes were the most violent, later named the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
